Issue

Attempting to set custom attributes in vCommander®, you receive the warning message There are no custom attributes defined in the system even though you have created one or more custom attributes.

Solution

This will occur when you are trying to set custom attributes at an infrastructure level which has no applicable custom attributes available. For example, in the list below, IP Address and Manager Email apply to forms, and all of the rest apply to Virtual Machines and vApps.

On a system with this configuration, if you were to right-click another infrastructure element, for example a datacenter, you would receive the warning message because there are no applicable custom attributes.

To make a custom attribute globally applicable, follow the steps below:

  1. Under the Configuration menu, click Custom Attributes.
  2. Select the attribute you wish to make global from the list, and click Edit.
  3. On the Define Attribute page, choose Applies To: All.

  4. Click Next, then Finish.

Note that once a custom attribute has been added to vCommander, you can only change it to applying to All. If you need to change a custom attribute configured to apply to cloud accounts (managed systems) to datastores, you must delete and recreate the custom attribute.
