vCommander® events are registered when users take any action, so that administrators have a complete audit log available for the future. Not only does this help with any compliance auditing your company may undergo, but also provides a means for admins to identify when changes were made and by whom. In this article, we look at how to perform an audit for any action.

Important:
By default, vCommander® is installed with a database maintenance job to purge events and task records older than one year. If you have audit requirements beyond this time frame, you must edit the default scheduled task. For more information, see the topic Maintaining the vCommander® Database in the Online Help or User Guide.

Profiling Events

If you have an exact event you want to search, the simplest way to determine how to filter the search is to take the action and examine the resulting events. For example, if someone has changed vCommander’s default settings and new datastores are no longer included in capacity, the following process would let you determine the exact filters to use.

  1. Login to vCommander as superuser, and under the Configuration menu, choose System Configuration.
  2. Switch to the Capacity tab.
  3. Under Datastore Configuration, click Edit.
  4. Make a change to the setting by checking or unchecking the Include new datastores in capacity checkbox.
  5. Under the Views menu, choose Operational.
  6. Select the top-level of the tree (Operational) and switch to the Events tab. There will be a row in the listgrid with details that correspond to the action:

  7. Use the filter controls to reduce the list to events that match the details of your test action:

Using this same process, you can easily identify the data to query for any results. When the results include the Username column, you are able to identify the users taking the action under investigation.

User-specific Auditing

Looking at the same problem from another angle, you can design a search which allows you to audit a single user’s actions. To do so, follow the instructions below:

  1. Under the Tools menu, choose Search.
  2. Choose Help Me Find > Events.
  3. Use the controls to set Filter By >  Username > contains > and enter the user account name you wish to audit. The image below uses superuser.

  4. Click Search.
  5. The Results tab displays the complete history of events generated by the selected user’s actions. As with any search results, you can save the query for re-use, or schedule regular delivery of the results as a report.
